Biography

I teach English Literature and Creative Writing at Downing College Cambridge. I publish academic books on Shakespeare and Renaissance Culture – especially the histories of science, religion and domestic life. I also write fiction and non-fiction. My recent non-fiction book, Vanishing Landscapes (Hodder, 2025), combines nature/travel writing with cultural history to tell the story of how we became alienated from the landscape at the end of the medieval period. In this book, I go out into the fields and farms of Britain and Ireland in search of people who are working with plants in the old way, to see if they have recovered the pre-modern perception of nature as alive with divinity.
