Prides and Prejudices and Variations: Jane Austen's modern collaborators

A living room with a vintage arm chair and desk with a bookcase.

In 1993 there were some sixty published revisions or sequels of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice; today there are over 2,000, with at least as many again posted to fanfic sites. After a hard look at the original and its vast popularity, and a wide overview of the fandom from which most variants arise, this course considers half-a-dozen published variations, some serious, some lighter-hearted, by Laraba Kendig, Lucy Marin, Melanie Rachel, Martin Hunncutt, and Gruinard, looking at what they do, how it works, and why the genre is so fiercely popular.
