A question of attribution: finds, fakes, and forensics in the museum world

A wide landscape view from the top of the main staircase inside the Natural History Museum, showing intricate stone architecture, archways, and patterned flooring in warm natural light.

This hands-on course demands your detective work toward in-depth analysis of historical objects in a variety of materials from across the centuries. We examine the rise of fakery and its techniques, explore the issues faced by museums and collectors, and scrutinise examples of items presented by the contemporary antiques trade. Important objects demand testing by science: what can forensics reveal, and does science always agree? Most of all, we listen to what the objects in the room tell us: does close scrutiny provide enough evidence to lead us to a correct attribution?
