Reading Classical Greek: Xenophon, Apology of Socrates

Stone with Greek inscription, the Ancient Lycian City of Patara, near Kaş, Turkey.

Xenophon was away from Athens when Socrates was tried and executed in 399 BCE, so his Apology of Socrates rests on the testimony of one Hermogenes (present at the trial), and the many accounts of it in circulation after Socrates’ death. It is unknown whether Xenophon knew of Plato’s Apology but his account of his friend’s defence speech differs in several respects (we will read the relevant passages in Plato for comparison) providing valuable insight into the reception of Socrates’ trial. The course will appeal to those with a confident grasp of the fundamentals of Classical Greek, and who want to explore the texts in the original language.
