The role of beauty in scientific practice

Scientific products are celebrated for their aesthetic dimension and compared to works of art. We regard Einstein's theory of relativity, the double helix model of DNA and the cosmic images produced by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope as beautiful. Scientists themselves, like artists, are praised for their creativity, originality and aesthetic sensibility. But what role does beauty play in science? Could it be a truth indicator or a systemic bias leading us astray? In this course we reflect philosophically on the role of beauty in scientific practice and how aesthetic values and experiences shape scientific inquiry.
