Three Masters of Beautiful Song: Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini

Inside the Manoel Theatre, located in Valletta, Malta

The venerable vocal traditions of the Baroque and Classical periods reached a pinnacle of attainment in the Italian Romantic operas of the early 19th century - in the work of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini - with an efflorescence of beautiful melody and exquisite control of the human voice as a reflection of the epitome of the human condition. In both the tragic and comic modes, these composers wrote operas of endearing charm and soul-searching pathos: Rossini - the master of opera buffa (The Barber of Seville); Bellini - the master of tragic melancholy (Norma); Donizetti - the master of both modes (Lucia di Lammermoor, L’elisir d’amore).
