University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) Tutor in History of Art, academic and writer

Biography

I teach European art and architecture from the Middle Ages to c.1800, as well as courses relating to Western art theory and histories of collecting. Having previously worked in the museum and heritage sectors, I am passionate about exploring topics such as display and conservation, alongside more traditional art historical approaches such as connoisseurship and iconography.

When preparing my first book, 'Visual Cultures of Death in Central Europe' (Brill 2015), my research took me to a range of locations, among them remote woodland chapels, print rooms and monastic archives. My teaching draws upon this ongoing research across historical sites and museum collections in Europe. When conducting fieldwork, I'm always on the lookout for new artworks and architecture to discuss. Most recently, I've been exploring collecting practices in Northern Europe in preparation for my next book. It's wonderful to have the chance to share these discoveries with my students at PACE.

I am an Associate of the Higher Education Academy with over twenty years' teaching experience. I'm also a Member of the Association for Art History; a Member of the Society of Authors, and part of the AHRC international research network ‘Connected Central European Worlds, 1500-1700’.
