Biography

I am a Professor of the History of Philosophy at the University of Pavia in Italy, and have been teaching at PACE since 2019. I keep coming back because it is a unique opportunity for intense philosophical discussions, and I greatly enjoy the atmosphere at Madingley Hall!

My philosophical trajectory has been very international, and I value the possibility to engage with PACE students from different backgrounds and speaking so many languages. A native Italian, I spent many years in Germany and in England, and I now call Great Britain my home, too.

I wrote my PhD on Hegel (Universities of Jena and Urbino), and then worked at several European universities and research institutes, including LMU in Munich, The Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, the University of Warwick, Queen Mary University of London, the Warburg Institute, and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

I specialise in Renaissance to modern philosophy. I am particularly interested in issues concerning the borders of ‘rationality’ – whether in my studies on mysticism, or on the distinction between human and non-human animals. I believe that the history of philosophy is essential for understanding the present, and it is in this spirit that I approach historical texts.

Since 2025, I lead the ERC funded project NEWWORLD – A Philosophical History of Early Modern Ecology (newworld.unipv.it). As part of this project, I will also curate a philosophical exhibition, which I hope to bring to Cambridge, too.
