Biography

I am a Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Churchill College. I am a cultural historian whose work focuses on history "from below". My book, Popular Culture in Ancient Rome (Polity, 2009), analysed the life of the non-elite in Roman society but I have also written on slavery, ancient disasters and the Games. My classes encourage collaboration and involve looking at a range of texts and images. There have been thirty-six translations of my books into seventeen languages. I have recently published Risk in the Roman World with Cambridge University Press (2023).
