Biography
I’m an Academic Associate at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where I teach modern and contemporary literature, critical theory, film, and visual culture. Since completing my PhD at Cambridge in 2019, I’ve also been a Teaching Associate at Queens' and Selwyn, as well as a Director of Studies in English at Pembroke. My research focuses primarily on modern and contemporary war literature, with further interests in the way literature has represented the rise of digital technology, and in the history of literary theory.
My teaching uses close reading to trace the development of modern literature and to address questions of theory and history. I’m guided by the conviction that small but richly meaningful texts can illuminate the larger structures we use to make sense of the world. I therefore invite students to reflect critically on their responses not only to literary texts, but also to the categories commonly used to make sense of them. Such reflection often involves drawing on a wide variety of both critical and popular materials, in addition to traditional literary forms.
