Biography

I've been writing children's books for thirty years now, and have been teaching those wanting to write for children for almost as long. I've written middle grade novels, one a national award winner, Winnie the Witch series fiction (under the name Laura Owen), many early reader books, picture books and board books. My best-selling series of picture books, the You Choose series illustrated by Nick Sharratt, have now sold well over two million copies, sold via McDonald's Happy Meals and even become a little stage show.
I  began my professional life with children's books as a bookseller, and have also worked for a publisher, gaining insights into the commercial imperatives behind which stories do, and don't, get published.
I love teaching, going into primary schools to help young children create and write stories, as well as teaching many adult writers over the years. I'm proud of those who have become published, but I also love working with those for whom simply writing the story they want to write is a great achievement.
The courses at PACE bring together actual or virtual classrooms of keen would-be writers for children from all over the world. It's a privilege to work with that range of cultures and talents, and I learn as well as teach on every course.
