Dr Midge Gillies will be in conversation with three creative non-fiction writers in this free Zoom event on Thursday, 23rd July, 2026, 7-8pm, UK time. Midge will be talking about the special pleasures and perils of biography with three authors whose books cover a wide range of life writing.

Dr Andrew Kenrick will be discussing his debut book, Rex Juba: 15 Glimpses of an African King (Penguin, August 2026). Andrew’s proposal for the book won the Biographers' Club Tony Lothian Prize and he is editor-in-chief of non-fiction magazine, Hinterland.

Joy McAlpine-Black’s biography, Ann Shaw: Mother of Methodism in South Africa (1788-1854) is the first to be written by an alumna of the Master’s in Creative Writing and is published by Lutterworth Press.

Jane Rogoyska’s new book, Hotel Exile: Paris in the Shadow of War (Allen Lane) is about what happens on the edges of a war. At its heart are three groups of people connected to a place, to one another, and to the dark ideology which dictates the course of their lives. The book was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction.

Andrew and Jane both teach creative non-fiction for PACE and Joy has studied on the Certificate and Diploma in Non-Fiction and the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing.
