Emerald Fennell’s 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights has reignited long‑running debates about how classic texts are reshaped for new generations. When a story as iconic as Emily Brontë’s is reimagined, what shifts, and what does that reveal about the original work, its themes, and its cultural afterlives?

In this session, led by Dr. Jenny Bavidge, Academic Director for English Literature at PACE, you’ll explore how contemporary adaptations illuminate aspects of the novel that may be overlooked, contested, or newly resonant today.

The discussion will consider what is gained and lost in translation from page to screen, how modern sensibilities influence character and narrative choices, and why certain reinterpretations provoke strong reactions from readers and viewers alike.

The session invites anyone interested in literature, adaptation, or cultural storytelling to think critically about how classic texts continue to evolve and what these evolutions tell us about the worlds that produce them.
