Midge Gillies will be in conversation with writer and artist Carol Adlam in this free Zoom event on Thursday 12 November, 2026, 7-8pm, UK time.

Carol has written and/or illustrated for many outlets including The Guardian, The United Nations, the Natural History Museum, the National Army Museum and The National Archives.

Her graphic books include: The Russian Detective (Jonathan Cape / Penguin Books 2024, shortlisted in the Adult Fiction category of the V&A Illustration Awards), Girton Time (Beam Editions, 2024), Thinking Room (Djanogly Gallery, 2017; World Illustration Awards Winner 2018), and, with Helen Cross, Ministry of Women (2016; WIA Shortlisted 2016), Suzanne’s Story (WIA Shortlisted 2015), The New Wipers Times (2015). She also writes graphic novel scripts, short stories, and audio scripts, and has published academic and other non-fiction as a visual and literary historian.

A new graphic novel, ELIZA, will be published by Virago in 2028, and she is also co-editor of The Letters of Eliza Raine, to be published by Oxford University Press, also in 2028. Both are about Eliza Raine, a British Indian woman who was the first 'wife' of Anne Lister, and whose letters are the only firsthand testimony we have of life in Regency Britain for a mixed ethnicity woman. These are part of Carol's ongoing interest in new ways of telling lost histories.'

Carol is Associate Professor of Illustration in the Nottingham School of Art and Design, Nottingham Trent University, and teaches creative writing for PACE.
