For Joey, learning has been key to finding her direction. At just 21, her path has already spanned a range of roles, from waitressing to lifeguarding, before a role at SEA LIFE Brighton helped clarify where her passion truly lies. Originally from Northampton in the East Midlands, Joey is now based in Brighton, where she balances her work at SEA LIFE with the final year of her BA (Hons) in Fine Art. It was through her day-to-day experience working with marine environments that she was inspired to deepen her understanding of ecology and conservation, leading her to study with us on the Undergraduate Certificate in Ecology and Conservation.

It was through working closely with marine environments and animals that inspired Joey to deepen her understanding of ecology and conservation, leading her to study with us. “After starting my degree and getting a job working with marine animals, I realised this is what I really want to do,” she explains. That moment of clarity prompted a change in direction and a return to study to gain the scientific grounding she needed.

Joey began her journey with University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) on the Undergraduate Certificate in Ecology and Conservation and is now undertaking the Advanced Diploma in Research Theory and Practice. “I was heading in a new career direction and needed qualifications to support my ambitions,” she says. “I wanted to build knowledge in natural sciences but also connect with people already working in the field.”

Choosing PACE felt like a natural step. “Having the University of Cambridge on my CV will open many doors,” Joey explains. “But just as important was the supportive atmosphere and the wide range of people coming together on these courses. I felt really drawn to that sense of community.”

Some of Joey’s standout moments have come through connecting with others. Attending a student networking dinner during her Certificate was particularly memorable. “I met so many incredible people from different countries and backgrounds. I really feel like I belong at PACE.” An introductory day at Madingley Hall for the Advanced Diploma also left a lasting impression. “Meeting my tutors and course mates, sharing great food and diving into philosophical discussions made me genuinely excited to start the course.”

Balancing part-time work with studying on two courses has required organisation but it’s been transformative. “Ironically, I’m less stressed now,” Joey reflects. “PACE has helped me become more organised and the flexibility means my studies fit around my other responsibilities. I can work at my own pace, but there’s always support when I need it.”

Reflecting on her journey so far, Joey sees her studies as a launchpad. “These courses are giving me everything I need to pursue a career in marine conservation, including valuable contacts in the field.” That foundation is already paying off she has recently been offered a place on Master’s in Marine Biology. “I’m incredibly excited and can’t wait to build a career that helps protect our oceans.”

Most of all, Joey’s confidence has grown. “I participate more in class now and feel completely capable of achieving my dreams,” she says. “No matter where you are in life, whether you’re changing careers or exploring something that truly interests you it’s always possible.”
