Biography
Introduction
Experienced architect, artist and tutor knowledgeable in designing and constructing buildings both within the UK and overseas. Recently teaching as an architecture lecturer at Norwich University of the Arts since 2018 and Part 3 viva examiner at London Metropolitan University. Previous practice work was at Squire & Partners for 19 years, becoming an associate in 1998 and a director in 2001, whilst undertaking several part-time educational roles as a studio tutor, examiner and mentor to students in practice.
Re-focusing of interests
In June 2016 left Squire & Partners to complete a 15 month sabbatical to travel long distance by bicycle and foot across Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, New Zealand, Japan and North America. Returned in October 2017 to work as a freelance consultant architect and artists. This period away from practice refocused future activity and interests into:
- Architectural teaching and research
- Making art
- Bicycle advocacy: Becoming a ‘Bike Buddy’ on the Bike Project programme to assist refugees newly arrived in London to navigate the city by bicycle.
Teaching
So much design education is focused on individual design concerns and not the real world collaborative nature of of practice. Joint projects, group conversations and dialogue are all key to William's educational interests.
