From AI adoption to AI value
Organisations across sectors are adopting AI, but most aren't yet seeing the value it promises.
Only 6% of organisations are getting real value from AI. The rest are using it, not yet transforming with it (source: McKinsey, State of AI, 2025).
That's exactly the capability this programme is built to produce: learners who can engineer AI to work reliably, securely, and at scale in production, closing the gap between adoption and value.
The PACE AI Engineering Career Accelerator is built to Level 7 standard, assessed both individually and as part of a team, and leads to a University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education certificate: a signal of sustained, verified engineering ability.
Much of the existing training market addresses this space with short courses and bootcamps, useful for orientation. This programme is assessed to a rigorous standard throughout and produces a certificate that employers recognise as direct evidence of production-ready skill.
3 pathways, one destination
A distinguishing feature of the programme is that it accommodates a wide spread of incoming ability while holding every learner to the same outcome.
Applicants are placed via a diagnostic conversation into one of three pathways, each converging on the same PACE credential:
Track 1: Non-coder ➜ AI Engineer – 36 weeks | Starts 26 October 2026
Track 2: Coder ➜ AI Engineer – 28 weeks | Starts January 2027
Track 3: Software Engineer ➜ AI Engineer – 16 weeks | Starts January 2027
You don't need to already be a developer, or come from a particular background, to become an AI engineer. What you need is the drive to build the capability, and a structured pathway that starts at the beginning and takes you all the way. Whether you've never written a line of code or you're already building production software, the programme starts from where you are and finishes in the same place: a working AI engineer.
Whichever pathway a learner enters through, all 3 are assessed against the same standard and converge on a shared employer-led capstone project, in which learners build a production AI system to a real employer-provided brief.
Academic standards, applied to a fast-moving discipline
PACE has set the learning outcomes and assessment standards for the programme, and awards the certificate on completion. The curriculum is developed and delivered by University of Cambridge faculty, including:

Learner support and career coaching are provided by FourthRev, an education provider specialising in industry-aligned digital skills programmes.
PACE sets and oversees the academic standard throughout, while FourthRev takes learners from day one through to outcome. The accelerator is also backed by the FourthRev Guarantee: learners achieve their agreed career outcome within 12 months, or receive up to 6 additional months of career coaching at no extra cost.
Curriculum: production AI engineering, built for outcomes
The curriculum covers the engineering disciplines required for responsible, production-grade AI work: large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI agents, and LLMOps, alongside AI security and responsible AI governance – including applied treatment of the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
Together, these disciplines move an organisation from using AI to running it in production, and from adoption to the 6% delivering real value.
Format and assessment
The programme runs part-time and entirely online, at 15–20 hours per week, over 16 to 36 weeks depending on pathway. Learning is largely asynchronous, with live faculty sessions scheduled outside standard working hours and recorded for later access – a format built to fit around the schedules of working professionals.
Assessment runs continuously throughout each course, culminating in the employer-led capstone project and an individual assessment as a condition of the credential. The certificate is a professional, non-credit-bearing award.
Entry requirements
Applicants should be aged 18 or over, meet the University of Cambridge English language requirements, and hold an undergraduate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
Beyond these baseline criteria, pathway placement is determined through a diagnostic conversation with an Enrolment Advisor, ensuring learners begin at a point genuinely matched to their existing capability.
