Biography

Clare is Reader in Medical Education, Research and Development, Institute for Health Sciences Education, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University London, as well as being External Examiner to the MA in Medical Education, University of Dundee and a Senior Tutor at the Institute for Continuing Education.

Clare is an experienced medical educator and scholar with a keen interest in the ways in which learning is supported in clinical environments. She has a portfolio career that allows her to combine her love of teaching with ongoing research activity.

Clare has twice been nominated for a National Teaching Excellence award (Higher Education Academy) in recognition of her student centred and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. Her mantra is ‘offer something the textbooks can’t’ and believes that ‘students should always be working harder than the teacher’!

Research topics

Clare’s research interests centre around the ways in which learning is supported in clinical workplaces. Her doctoral work explored the impact of NHS reform on medical apprenticeship and the linked ‘professionalisation’ of medical education agenda. Current research activities include: • An evaluation of an innovative leadership development programme for postgraduate trainees in psychiatry, commissioned by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. • A study exploring the value of digital storytelling for young people with chronic, complex medical conditions. • A study exploring clinician, student and patient attitudes towards the risks involved in delegating work to medical students in a forensic mental health setting.
