Professor Stephen Upex
Archaeologist and Landscape Historian

Biography

I have been associated with the work at PACE for over a decade and have taught on a range of courses all concerned with landscape history and archaeology. I write about mainly Roman and Saxon landscapes although my interests range from prehistory through into the medieval period where I did my PhD on open field systems. I have never failed to be excited by how people lived in the past. Handling Roman pottery with the potters' fingerprints on it still gives me a real buzz. My recent publications include books on the Romans in the Nene valley, Edmund Artis an early antiquarian, and I am currently working on books related to early excavations on Roman suburbs, another on Roman pottery and one out soon on Saxon landscapes.
