For Haeng-A, studying the MSt in English Language Assessment at University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) was a way to bridge her classroom experience with advanced theory and research. With a background in teaching summative assessment preparation in Australia, she saw the programme as an opportunity to deepen her understanding of how assessments shape learning.
“The key reason I wanted to study on this course was to incorporate my teaching and assessment experience with theory and practice taught by the experts in the field,” she said.
She was especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of the programme. “The combination of linguistics, education, and assessment, combined with research sessions, allows me to connect concepts to create the ‘assessment for learning’ cycle,” she said.
The part-time format enabled her to continue working in Australia, where she has since expanded her professional experience. “I’ve been able to pursue a role at the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority as an invigilator for the National Assessment Program–Literacy and Numeracy,” she said. “I’m also working for the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority as a senior external exam marker and test validator.”
Face-to-face residentials offered additional depth to the experience. “Having two residential teaching weeks, where I can share my insight with my colleagues and lecturers, has been incredibly valuable,” she said. “Being able to work and study at the same time has meant I can view assessment from different perspectives.”
The course has strengthened both her confidence and her professional practice. “It has confirmed my belief in learning through assessment,” she said. “And it’s given me confidence in my teaching practice.”
