While studying industrial design at Auburn University in Alabama, Robert was awarded a scholarship from his high school to attend the University of Cambridge’s International Summer Programme. Over four weeks, he immersed himself in courses on global politics and business - and left with a broadened worldview and new confidence in his future.
“The chance to learn from world-renowned experts in the heart of Cambridge opened my eyes to so many different perspectives,” he said. “All of the tutors were so inspirational and knowledgeable that you couldn’t help but listen intently. Not one speaker was like another - they each brought something fresh, lucid, and completely engaging.”
Beyond the classroom, Robert was struck by the energy and diversity of his fellow students. “The real highlight was the people Cambridge allowed me to meet,” he said. “A lot of students already had industry experience, so it was fascinating to hear what the marketplace is really like. Everyone there wanted to learn as badly as I did - and we were in a great environment that encouraged that.”
He also formed lasting friendships with students from across the world. “I met people not only from the United States but from all over Europe,” he said. “Now, if I’m ever in Italy, Malta, or Scandinavia, I know I have someone I can reach out to - and that’s solely because of Cambridge.”
Staying at Gonville & Caius College made the experience even more memorable. “Every walk felt like you were on holiday, even if you were just cycling to class,” he said. “To be in a place where so many great minds have walked - it’s very inspiring. You really aspire to follow in their footsteps.”
His advice to others considering the programme? “If you believe in self-betterment and want to meet incredible instructors with stories that will stay with you, do it,” he said. “Cambridge gives you the chance to apply yourself to a renowned institution, and you really feel a part of that. I left knowing I could go anywhere, root myself, and do good work.”
