Music for Christmas and other festivities

A group of people wearing Santa hats and festive attire, gathered around a grand piano and illuminated Christmas trees in the atrium of what appears to be a cruise ship, with a multi-level, mirrored staircase winding upwards in the background.

Music has always been a part of human celebrations, and from the Middle Ages to the present day there are records of events that marked major events in the church calendar, at state functions and in the privacy of individuals’ lives. This course looks at the many types of occasion that were adorned with music, including weddings, banquets, thanksgivings and royal birthdays. There will be both recorded and some live music examples of motets, operas, keyboard works and festival music from around Europe, and further afield.
