Biography
I am the course director for the MSt in Genomic Medicine. The course is a key component of NHS England's strategy to promote equitable access to the state-of-the-art in healthcare. I have the incredible privilege of supporting a range of part-time learners from across the genomics ecosystem.
Prior to joining University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education, I led the School of Medicine and Clinical practice at Wolverhampton, having previously been a part of the senior team that established the new undergraduate medical school at Buckingham. Before then, I held research positions at Bristol, Pittsburgh and Cambridge following my PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh's medical school.
Research topics
My early studies of the response of blood cancer to therapy in Edinburgh and Bristol led me to postdoctoral research in the USA, where I studied the molecular biology of haematopoiesis (the development of blood cells). I moved on to study skin cancer in Cambridge, and in Buckingham I led a multi-disciplinary informatics group. More recently, I have come to understand the importance of the evidence base for good teaching. This has led me to explore the science of learning.
I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2016 and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the Academy of Medical Educators and a member of the Association for the Study of Medical Education.
