
The MSt (flexible) in Genomic Medicine is only open to those who have successfully completed and passed the Postgraduate Diploma in Genomic Medicine, or Postgraduate Diploma (flexible) in Genomic Medicine at Univeristy of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE).
This is a 10 month, part-time Master’s-level course equivalent to 60 credits.
The course is part of the suite of postgraduate courses in Genomic Medicine designed to further educate suitably qualified NHS healthcare professionals from across the multi-professional team, to prepare them for the future adoption of genomic technologies and the increasing use of genomic information as part of the diagnosis and treatment pathways.
The programme has been developed by PACE and Cambridge University Hospitals in partnership with Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and Wellcome Connecting Science.

Educational aims
The overall aims of the programme are to:
- provide professionally relevant teaching and learning informed by research in an integrated clinical and research environment;
- develop and create a cohort of doctors and other professionals allied to medicine to be able to pursue and develop their roles in the rapidly-changing and challenging environment of genomic medicine;
- prepare healthcare professionals for the adoption of genomic technologies and the increasing use of genomic information as part of the diagnostic and treatment pathway;
- develop researchers competent in the use of genomic technologies for biomedical research
- develop a cohort of health care professionals with the ability and confidence to lead service improvement for safe and high-quality patient care
- develop a cohort of health care professionals allied to medicine with an understanding of research methodologies and clinical opportunities relevant to genomic medicine;
- encourage a commitment to intellectual challenge and evidence-based clinical practice informed by the latest conceptual and theoretical knowledge of genomic medicine;
- develop students' intellectual, practical and transferable skills related to genomic medicine;
- encourage critical thinking related to genomic medicine;
- for the MSt, to conduct systematic research relevant to their professional practice;
- equip students for entry into health care professional training schemes including graduate entry medicine courses;
- prepare students for undertaking research degrees (PhD) in genomic medicine-related research fields;
- provide students from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other industries with an understanding of the relevance of advances in genomics for current and future health care.
Knowledge and Understanding
- Enhance students’ knowledge and critical understanding of recent developments in genomic medicine relevant to their present and future roles.

Skills and other attributes
- The skills necessary to locate, read, interpret and analyse primary and secondary sources of material enabling the development of a conceptual and theoretical understanding of recent developments in genomic medicine.
- Skills to evaluate current scholarship and research critically and to place this knowledge within the context of their own situation and practice as clinical leaders.
- The ability to formulate a research topic relevant to their clinical context, to collect and analyse primary and/or secondary sources of data, and to undertake professionally relevant research.
- The facility to communicate the results of their ideas, research and its conclusions in a written form acceptable as a work of scholarship potentially publishable in a professional or academic journal.

Expected academic standard
Applicants for this course are expected to have achieved a UK 2.i honours degree or equivalent.
If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
Language requirement
If English isn’t your first language, you will be required to submit evidence that you meet the University’s English language requirement before you are admitted.

Language requirements for this course are below:
- IELTS Academic: Overall band score of 7.5 (with a minimum of 7.0 in each individual component)
- TOEFL Internet: Overall score of 110 (a minimum of 25 in each individual component)
- C1 Advanced: Grade A or B (with at least 193 in each individual element), plus a Language Centre assessment.
- C2 Proficiency: Grade A, B, or C (with at least 200, with no element lower than 185)
There are no exceptions to this requirement and, if you are offered a place on the course, it will be subject to you meeting this requirement.
Visa information
Students registered on a part-time Master of Studies (MSt) will be able to attend the short teaching sessions with a visitor status in the UK. Entry to the UK as a visitor has a number of expectations and restrictions which you should consider carefully.

Students attending sessions taking place at intervals across the year with a visitor status are expected not to remain in the UK for extended periods. The majority of study must be undertaken outside the UK and generally students will be required to leave the UK at the end of each session and return for the next. As a visitor on a course of more than 6 months, it is not possible to make the UK your main study location or residence, or make frequent or successive visits to stay in the UK for extended periods.
This is a part-time course designed to fit with the demands of full-time employment. The course is delivered using blended learning methods through a combination of face-to-face sessions requiring attendance in Cambridge and self-directed learning, supported through a virtual learning environment [VLE].
For the MSt (flexible), students must complete
- a research project of 10,000 to 12,000 words (to combine with 8 modules taken previously)
or
- a literature-based research project of 5,000 to 6,000 words plus two further modules (to make a total of 10 taught modules)
Fees
The fees for 2025 entry will be £5,850 for Home students and for overseas students, £15,237.
An application fee of £50 is payable for all applicants.
Funding
Students are required to fund travel, accommodation and subsistence during the programme of study.
HEE funding is available for NHS staff wishing to apply to study Genomic Medicine at The University of Cambridge for study of individual modules or modules as part of a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or part-time Masters in Genomic Medicine. Limited funding is also available for those wishing to extend their study from a Postgraduate Certificate or 4 modules to a Postgraduate Diploma or MSt. All funding is subject to availability.
Prospective students wishing to apply for HEE funding should apply for their course place in the first instance. HEE funding is accessed through the University following receipt of a conditional offer of a place to study (and not by applying directly to HEE). The application deadline has now been extended to the 30th May 2025 with applications dealt with in two batches; any applications received up to the 30th April 2025 will be considered in batch one, and any applications received between the 1st and 30th May 2025 in batch two. Should the course become full, we reserve the right to close for applications early. As a result, we would encourage applicants to apply as soon as possible.
