Beverley enrolled on the Undergraduate award: Diploma in International Relations at University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) while balancing two jobs and raising her child as a single parent. In recovery from a brain haemorrhage, she was also seeking a way to re-engage her mind and rebuild her confidence.
“Studying this course at Professional and Continuing Education appealed to me as a lone parent working two jobs,” she said. “I recently suffered from a brain haemorrhage and was looking for something to engage my brain as a good rehabilitating exercise.”
She was awarded the Professional and Continuing Education 150th Anniversary Bursary, which made it possible to enrol. As the first person in her family to attend university, access to higher education was more than a milestone – it was life-changing.
“Without this bursary I would not have been able to do this course.”
Beverley described the course content as broad and accessible, with a teaching style that supported new learners without being overwhelming. It gave her a solid foundation in international relations and helped her grow in confidence as a student.
Now she encourages others to explore what support might be available. “Check what financial help you could get,” she advises. “This course has been crucial to me on both a personal and academic level.”
